Decreasing Length of Stay (LOS) in the Emergency Department (ED) by Creating an Innovative Role
Actual to Budget Performance Assessment
During its initial meetings, the ED Throughput Committee made the decision to adopt the Patient Flow Facilitator (PFF) role, a best practice they learned from visiting Lakeland Regional Medical Center. In March 2014, ED Director Sherine Craig, RN, reviewed with the committee the latest Departmental Responsibility Report (DRR), which reflected the department’s expense and total man hours per unit of service for the existing fiscal year (FY) (EP10 05a ED Throughput Committee Meeting Minutes 3/19/14 and ED DRR 3/14). It showed that the actual man hours were already slightly above what was budgeted. For this reason, Craig discussed her plan of requesting an additional 1.8 FTE in the succeeding FY to support the PFF role with the group. In October 2014 (beginning of FY 2015), Craig obtained the additional 1.8 FTE (EP10 07a FY 15 Operating Budget Labor Worksheet) and requested them accordingly (EP10 07 Approved FTE Request).
